The pledge was made by the Minister of Health, Dr. Diane Gashumba, who was representing President Paul Kagame, at the Global Fund's Sixth Replenishment conference which ended yesterday in Lyon, France.

Hosting the conference in Lyon, Mr Macron said 13.92 billion United States dollars (£11.3 billion) had been promised for the work - and he vowed to keep pushing for more.

He was speaking today in Lyon, France after meeting with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron at day-two of the 6 Replenishment Conference of the Global Fund to fight HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Every three years, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria holds a conference to replenish its financial resources and public and private sector donors announce their financial pledges.

Most of that $14 billion is destined for the African continent, where millions of people have died from these epidemics.

He said this morning that France had raised its pledge by 15 percent to €1.5 billion and later pledged an additional €60 million.

Global Fund's appeal to the world leaders has been positively responded to, the Fund said through its Twitter account on Thursday. "It is a decision to invest against injustice", said the French president, highlighting the disproportionate rate of infection and deaths from AIDS, TB and malaria in poor countries, and among women and girls.

The US Congress has approved a commitment to give a total of $4.68 billion (€4.24bn) over three years.

Kenya is not only a donor but also an implementer of Global Fund-supported programmes. Major recipients of the fund are Nigeria, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. This money will allow the Global Fund to support affected countries and populations with a view to saving 16 million lives, preventing 234 million new infections and continuing to finance innovations and improvements for health systems.

The Global Fund said the programs it supported since its creation have already saved 32 million lives.
