UAW letter to GM indicates that strike won't end quickly

General Motors Chief Executive Mary Barra has stepped into contract talks with striking auto workers, asking the union to wrap up outstanding issues and respond to a company offer made this week.

The automaker said that on October 7 it presented an updated offer to the UAW, which would increase compensation and preserve health care benefits without raising out-of-pocket expenses.

Committees are working on issues such as products for factories that GM wants to close, investments in other US factories, and training for union workers to handle future technology, according to Dittes' letter. The union says GM has tried to "undermine" its efforts before and during the strike.

"We have openly told GM that we do not see a solid commitment to this talented and skilled workforce that has made them billions of dollars in profits", reads a letter from Dittes.

"We have advised the Union that it's critical that we get back to producing quality vehicles for our customers", GM Executive Vice President Gerald Johnson wrote in a letter to employees. It's an indication that there won't be a quick end to the almost monthlong strike by 49,000 workers that has halted production at all of GM's US factories.

Johnson and Varadkar met at Thornton Manor, a venue more commonly used for luxury weddings than discussing worldwide divorce terms.

Johnson acknowledged the strike has been hard on workers, their families as well as the communities where the company is located. GM said its latest proposal "would create a clear path to permanent employment and include a ratification bonus".

"We are committed to the collective bargaining process, and we are committed to our future together", he wrote.

Both sides are separated on major economic issues such as wages and lump-sum payments and better pensions that will be bargained at the "main table" by top negotiators. The only negotiations since Monday have been smaller committees working on specific issues, such as sourcing of work and technological progress, not the more comprehensive discussions needed to reach a final agreement. Credit Suisse estimated the loss could hit about $1.5 billion.

Barra met with UAW President Gary Jones and senior union negotiator Terry Dittes on Wednesday at GM world headquarters, where negotiations are happening. No new formal offers are expected to be presented by UAW officials, according to one source familiar with the talks.

Moody's said in a Friday report that GM must maintain its flexibility under any new deal to build electric and self-driving vehicles without its fixed costs rising further. The company said at the time that it would construct a new electric-vehicle battery factory in Lordstown and build an electric truck in its plant bordering Detroit and the town of Hamtramck. GM says it has found other jobs for 2,300 of the 3,000 workers who worked in those plants, but many had to relocate. We believe that the vehicles GM sells here should be built here.
