President Donald Trump has added former representative Trey Gowdy as an adviser to the legal team fighting the impeachment promoted by the Democrats that rose out of the phone call between President Trump and President Zelenskiy of Ukraine.

It was unclear what specific role Gowdy would play in the current White House strategy of not cooperating with the investigation, but when word got out that he was being considered, a television clip from 2012 surfaced showing him saying it is "wrong" to withhold documents from Congress regardless of politics.

Now a lawyer in Greenville, South Carolina, Gowdy has been a regular contributor on Fox News since leaving Congress.

As a congressman, Gowdy was a fierce advocate of Congress's oversight powers of the Executive Branch, and chaired the House Select Committee on Benghazi from 2014 to 2016.

He is also recognized for his impartiality and his respect for the rule of law.

The Ukraine case is a controversial impeachment process against President Trump, which claims he would have called on the Ukrainian president for an alleged "favor" to investigate former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, who is his political rival in the 2020 elections.

In response to a question from us about Gowdy becoming his chief attorney, Trump replied before boarding the Marine One helicopter that the former congressman has "a problem. he can't start for another couple of months because of lobbying rules and regulations".

Gowdy was chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and the head of the House Benghazi Committee in charge of investigating the terrorists attack in Libya that left four Americans dead including ambassador Christopher Stevens.

As House Oversight chairman, Gowdy was lambasted by Trump and his allies for disagreeing with the president's "spygate" theory, a notion that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Obama administration tried to upend his chances of being elected president and were politically motivated when the agency placed an informant within the Trump campaign to investigate Russian efforts to subvert a US election.

Gowdy's insistence on administrative compliance with congressional investigations while serving in the House is at odds with the White House's most recent approach to the impeachment inquiry. His legal skills and his advocacy will serve the President well. Tim Scott, R-S.C., Gowdy's very close friend.

"Trey's command of the law is well known and his service on Capitol Hill will be a great asset as a member of our team", Sekulow said.
