Australia is anxious Turkey's military incursion in northern Syria could galvanize a resurgence of the Islamic State group, and has refused to endorse the close ally USA for pulling back its troops from the area.

"Our heroic commandos taking part in Operation Peace Spring are continuing to advance east of the Euphrates", the Turkish Defense Ministry wrote on Twitter on Thursday, posting a video showing soldiers firing rifles in darkness as they advanced, Reuters reported.

A Kurdish-led group and Syrian activists claimed on Thursday that despite the heavy barrage, Turkish troops had not made much progress on several fronts they had opened.

US President Donald Trump tried to justify the de facto green light he gifted his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan for an assault seen as a blatant betrayal of Washington's erstwhile Kurdish allies.

In the statement the European Union "calls upon Turkey to cease the unilateral military action", adding that "renewed armed hostilities in the north-east will further undermine the stability of the whole region, exacerbate civilian suffering and provoke further displacements".

The Arab League meets Saturday for an extraordinary meeting at the request of Egypt, in connection with the Turkish offensive in northeast Syria.

Thousands of people fled the Syrian town of Ras al Ain toward Hasaka province, held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.

In Yerevan, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian called on the worldwide community to take measures to stop Turkey's "illegal actions" in Syria and "protect the rights of Syrian citizens, including ethnic minorities, living along the border with Turkey". They are going to now face trial in america.

Mr Trump's decision to have American troops step aside in north-eastern Syria was a major shift in U.S. policy and drew opposition from all sides at home.

"The Syrian Kurds, including the 300,000 exiles in Turkey, are under Turkish protection".

Stoltenberg told a news conference in Rome that while Turkey, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally, "has legitimate security concerns, ... it is important to avoid actions that may further destabilise the region, escalate tensions and cause more human suffering".

Trump insisted that he did not endorse the Turkish invasion in any way, calling it a "bad idea", and yet again promised to "wipe out" Turkey's economy if Ankara fails to protect civilians and religious minorities, or fails to ensure no humanitarian crisis takes place.

Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Ministry called for an "immediate" halt to Turkey's offensive and the withdrawal of Turkish troops from Syrian territory, citing concerns about the humanitarian situation and the dangers to civilians in the conflict zone.

Russia, the main worldwide backer of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad, said it planned to push for dialogue between the Syrian and Turkish governments following the incursion. This action imperils American security and that of our allies.

The two operations were in line with the country's right to self-defense under global law, UN Security Council resolutions, especially no. 1624 (2005), 2170 (2014) and 2178 (2014), and the right to self-defense under the Article 51 of UN Charter, while being respectful of Syria's territorial integrity.

They also would sanction anyone who conducted military transactions with Turkey or supported energy production for use by its armed forces, bar USA military assistance to Turkey and require a report on Erdogan's net worth and assets.
